Dermot Earley Youth Leadership Testimonies

Ceannaireacht Óige Dermot Earley / DE Youth Leadership course.
Insíonn beirt scoláire idirbhliain dúinn faoin gcúrsa go dtí seo / Updates from two of this year’s TY students on their Dermot Earley journey so far.
Táim ag glacadh páirt sa chúrsa ceannaireachta Dermot Earley i mbliana le thart ar 30 dalta idirbhliana eile. Buailimid le chéile ar oíche Aoine agus bíonn beirt ón ghrúpa ag bácáil gach seachtain ionas go bhfuil rud beag milis againn don bhriseadh!
Roimh an Nollaig, thugamar faoi mhodúl 1 den chúrsa. D’fhoghlaimíomar faoi na tréithe difriúla a bhaineann le ceannairí agus d’imríomar an-chuid cluichí chun iad seo a léiriú. Chuireamar deireadh leis an modúl sin le cur i láthair faoi sprioc cheannaireachta a bhí againn.
Ó Mhí Eanáir, táimid ag obair ar mhodúl 2 den chúrsa. Táimid ag forbairt ar an eolas atá againn faoi cheannaireacht agus ag tabhairt faoi thionscnamh grúpa taighde. Tá orainn cur i láthair a dhéanamh chuig ár dteaghlaigh go luath. Roghnaigh grúpaí taighde a dhéanamh ar réimse cheist cosúil le caomhnú fiadhúlra, neamhionannas i spórt, agus míbhuntáistí na meáin shóisialta.
I gceann cúpla sheachtain, leanfaimid ar aghaidh le modúl 3. Is gá do gach duine tionscnamh gníomh pobail a dhéanamh go neamhspleách nó i ngrúpa beag. Tar éis na hoibre seo ar fad a chuir isteach, gheobhaimid ár gcéim i gCeannaireacht Óige agus Gníomh Pobail ó Ollscoil na Gaillimhe i Mí na Samhna.

Since October I have been taking part in Cuala’s Dermot Earley Youth Leadership Initiative which is a programme where teenagers meet on Friday nights and work towards a level 6 third-level qualification in Youth Leadership and Community Action from the University of Galway.
During the first module, we learnt about a range of topics focusing on community impact and leadership through fun and interactive sessions with our brilliant facilitators. These were great as they introduced us to new ideas and we got to know everyone so much better.
Throughout the course we have welcomed many guest speakers to our sessions. These have included the minister for health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, 5-time All-Ireland winner Rory O’Carroll and many more.
In module 2 we have been working on group projects. We looked at issues in our community and began researching them. We then worked together in teams to produce a report on these issues and present it. This presentation took place on Friday night in Cathal Brugha Barracks where we all dressed up and spoke to a large audience including our families and friends.
Soon we will be moving on to module 3 where we will each come up with a way to spend time showing leadership and helping in our community. It has been a great opportunity and we are all looking forward to getting our qualifications in November.
