Cuala Hosts a Splendid Peil Féile Sunday in Thomastown
Sunday, April 12th was a day to remember as Cuala B proudly hosted their Peil Féile competition in Thomastown. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the 2011 parents, coaches, and Cuala volunteers, the grounds were transformed into a sea of red and white. Bunting, flags, and immaculate pitches set the tone for a festival of football and community spirit.
From early morning, supporters were treated to an impressive spread of sandwiches, buns, cakes, and homemade treats. Visiting clubs and referees alike were full of praise for the hospitality, generosity, and warmth shown by the hosts. A superb, friendly atmosphere carried through the day, helped along by lively rivalry, good‑natured banter, and Susie’s now‑famous playlist drifting across the fields.
Adding to the sense of occasion, a piper led the parade for both the Cup and Shield finals, followed by a stirring rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann. The sun shone for much of the morning before the weather turned dramatic—just in time to heighten the tension of the closing matches.
Competitive Football and High Drama
The Shield competition featured Ballinteer St Johns, Ballyboden St Endas, Templeogue Synge Street, and Raheny. After a series of spirited and skilful games, Templeogue Synge Street emerged as deserving Shield champions, earning warm applause from all in attendance.
In the Cup, St Peregrines / Garda Westmanstown Gaels edged St Kevins Killians in a thrilling semi‑final that went to extra time. Cuala booked their place in the final after overcoming Beann Eadair in a high‑scoring, fast‑paced encounter.
The Cup Final itself was a gripping, low‑scoring battle between two familiar rivals. Peregrines Westmanstown, having won the earlier group match by a single point, were hoping for a repeat. But Cuala burst out of the blocks, dominating early possession and kicking some superb points in the first half.
As the game tightened, Peregrines Westmanstown fought their way back, while Cuala’s defensive unit produced a phenomenal display—chasing in packs, blocking heroically, and standing firm in nerve‑shredding goalmouth scrambles. With the wind rising and heavy rain sweeping in, missed frees and heart‑stopping moments kept everyone on edge.
In the final ten minutes, roared on by passionate home support, Cuala held their nerve and secured a hard‑earned two‑point victory.
A Day to Celebrate
After an incredible, family‑centred day of sport and community, the Cuala B Boys graciously accepted the Féile 5 Cup—capping off what was already a magnificent occasion.
And the excitement isn’t over. The Hurling Féile Finals take place on Sunday, April 26th. After such a successful hosting, Cuala may well be stepping forward again… so keep an eye out and come support our teams whatever the venue as they chase more Féile glory.
