Cardiac screening

On Friday February 27th and Saturday February 28th, the 2012 Boys group organised for Advanced Medical Services (AMS) to visit Cuala to run a cardiac screening clinic for our juvenile male and female players.
Each year up to 100 people die in Ireland from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS). It is estimated that 1 in 300 people may have a cardiac abnormality, with the incidence of SADS being higher in Ireland than many other European countries. The GAA’s Medical, Scientific and Welfare committee now recommends periodic cardiac screening for all players from around 14 years and above.
Over two days of screening at the Halla:
- 75 Cuala players from u14 to U16 age-groups were screened.
- 16 girls and 59 boys attended.
- Each player had a 12-lead ECG, a physical cardiac exam and blood pressure, plus a range of other cardiometabolic health checks.
The screening session was highly successful. Demand was very high across the two days, with all of the available slots used up. Players’ parents will be receiving their results over the coming days. AMS will share with Cuala the cumulative number of players who have been referred on to a cardiologist so we will have this information as a baseline for the club.
If there is any interest in running cardiac screening at the club again, please just email Darrin at darrin.morrissey@gmail.com, and he would be delighted to make the connections.
