Historic Match Programme Recalls 1989 SHC Success
Cartlann Digiteach Cuala (Cuala Digital Archive) is delighted to report the latest acquisition for its collection of club memorabilia.
An eagle-eyed Colin Behan spotted a familiar-looking match programme for sale on ebay. It was an original match programme from 1989, heralding a fixture that was to see Cuala achieving its very first Senior Hurling Championship Trophy. Naturally, Colin acquired the historic parchment “at enormous expense” – and a lot more than its original sale price of 50 new pence.
We’re delighted to have been given the opportunity to digitise this document and we thank Colin for his initiative in ‘rescuing’ the programme.
You can inspect the complete match programme for Cuala v St. Vincents here and marvel at the familiar names that adorned the team sheet. Sadly, three players from the panel are no longer with us. Brendan Ryan, Stephen ‘Soss’ Byrne and Mick Holden have since passed away having made memorable contributions to Cuala and Dublin. Remarkably, most of the players on that fateful afternoon, and their families, continue to be actively involved in Cuala to this very day.
UPDATE: We also include press cuttings previewing and reporting the game. We very much appreciate Colm O’Leary’s helpfulness in making these available.
