On Sunday, May 3rd 2015 the proposed Wings for Life World Run event will begin in Newtownsmith, Dun Laoghaire and follow a route through the suburbs of Dalkey, Killiney, Ballybrack, Shankill and onwards into County Wicklow.

Wings for Life?is a not-for-profit spinal cord research?foundation and its mission is to find a cure for spinal cord injury. The Irish run is one of 52 taking place around the world simultaneously. The event will be broadcast globally to an audience of over 200 million people, promoting counties Dublin and Wicklow to a huge global audience Over 200,000 people will compete globally. The expected attendance in Dun Laoghaire is 2,000 persons.

This global event will raise much needed funds for this worthwhile cause. Over 60 persons a year are afflicted by spinal cord injury in Ireland and the foundation is currently making huge strides towards a cure. We will also be involving relevant Irish bodies in this project, such as the National Rehabilitation Hospital, based in Dun Laoghaire and the Irish Wheelchair Association.

The event will commence at 12.00pm in the grounds of Newtownsmith Park, Dun Laoghaire. Runners will proceed along the R119 southbound. The runners will be pursued by a ‘catcher car’ and will endeavour to cover as much distance as possible before being ‘caught’ by the vehicle, at which point they will be eliminated from the race and transported back to the start area. Further details on the event format and purpose of the foundation can be accessed at: www.wingsforlifeworldrun.com

Unfortunately, as with all running events, there will be some traffic disruption, with road closures and partial road closures in place. The Event organisers are working closely with the Gardai and local government, to minimise any inconvenience caused.

In the second hour of the race, 1pm to 2pm, the majority of runners will be active along the section of road between Shankill, Bray and Greystones. Signage will be provided along the route. The catcher car will be active in the Shankill to Greystones area within the same time period.
