The Minor Bs got their Hurling Season off to a great start on Sunday (1st). An away draw against a stylish Clontarf was a good result in itself but the story behind it gives even more satisfaction. This was a brand new team under new management of Paul O’Sullivan & Paul Whelan and it might have been expected they’d take a few games before settling down. Despite a hearty effort in the first 30 minutes, things looked bleak at half time – 6 points adrift and about to turn into a stiff wind and face a Clontarf side that had shown themselves to be skilful, well-organised and fit. But some spiritual advice delivered at the interval by the “Two Pauls” seems to have had the desired effect because then shades of another Paul seemed to take hold – the one once seen on the road to Damascus. And what a conversion it was. The Dalkey boys took to the field and produced a stunning performance – contesting each and every sliother and running their hearts out. That “never-say-die” attitude was to be seen all over the pitch from Keeper to Full Forwards and that effort paid off when two goals inside a minute near the end of the game brought Cuala level and left a stunned Clontarf side feeling a little like their ancient Danish visitors. It just goes to show its never over ’til its over.
