Cuala’s Concern for Somalia

Not exactly what us Cuala folk would call great hurling country is it?  Welcome to Somalia, where a “family hike” is not quite the fun event you’d associate with a grand Cuala day out.  For them, it’s a matter of life or death.  Somalia is one of the poorest countries in the world, devastated by over twenty years of conflict.   Almost half the population is under the age of 18, and have never known their country without war.

Like Cuala families, Somalis have a strong kinship network and a rich tradition of supporting those in need in their communities.  Despite their resilience, years of conflict, recurrent drought and cyclical flooding has made nearly a third of the population in need of humanitarian assistance.  Millions of people live without access to basic services such as clean water, education or health care.

Now you can do something to help.

Cuala’s Concern for Somalia is a charity fundraising initiative in the form of a Sponsored Family Hike in Glendalough on Sun 8 Jan 2012.  Sponsorship forms and more detailed arrangements will be available shortly.  All we need you to do now is to keep your diary free for the big day.
