The Cuala Thar Lar Gallery hasn’t seen anything quite like this; never before has the Cuala brand been given pride of place in such an exotic and worthwhile location. And it’s all thanks to the efforts of Mikie Sheanon who, among 750 Irish volunteers, who took part in this year’s Niall Mellon Township Challenge. Working in the township of Wallacedene, (40Km from Cape Town) in temperatures of over 35°C, Mikie & his colleagues built 140 (yes, one hundred and forty!) houses for families previously living in shacks. Mikie is quick to point out that this would not have been possible without the support of his many friends in Cuala – not just in 2010 but over the 6 years in which he has been participating in this amazing venture. To show his appreciation for Cuala’s support over the years, Mikey sought permission to dedicate one of the houses to Cuala and you can see it and other fantastic images of the project in the Cuala Gallery. If you missed the opportunity to contribute to the project, its not too late – you can contact Mikie Sheanon – who knows, he might even do it all again.
